“Good editors are really the third eye—cool, dispassionate. They don’t love you or your work.”
-Toni Morrison

As the deputy editor, race and equity at Guardian US, I oversee our news, enterprise, and project-based journalism on matters of, well, race and equity. Previously, I was a senior editor at The Atlantic covering human-interest and culture stories about American identity. Prior to joining The Atlantic, I was a fellow at the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard University.

Before that, I was the features editor for Essence. I assigned and edited stories on topics on reproductive rights, gun violence, politics, public health, and social justice. Features I’ve worked on have won awards from the Society of Professional Journalists and the National Association of Black Journalists. I started my journalism career at More and Marie Claire magazines, where I wrote across the culture, news, and lifestyle sections. I have a B.A. from Georgetown University and I’m from Brooklyn.
